Going Green
Now that we're feeling the summer heat during the -ber months and we experienced rainshowers during the summer months, the effect of global warming is really here. It's an impending doom, a friend once told me. I, for one, do what I can to minimize my carbon footprint. The company I work for, Carat Philippines, has a Green Bean Program that helps everyone in the group, and in the building, help in minimizing our footprints.
A few days earlier, I saw these signs along Dela Costa and Valero streets in Salcedo Village. It looks like the Makati City government is also helping and encouraging the public to minimize their emission of greenhouse gases by providing the E-JEEPNEY, which isn't really an alternative to the jeepney since there are currently no jeepneys on this route, but a new way to get around Salcedo Village without using your car.
Kudos to the Makati government for this initiative but it would be better if the E-Jeepney actually REPLACED the real one. Oh and by the way, it's free of charge. But for how long? =)

Going Up?
Discovered this new contraption in the basement parking of Il Terrazo along Tomas Morato.
How it works:
- you park on the platform/s, then when the 3 slots on the 1st level are full, they raise the leftmost one and slide the remaining two to the left side so that the one on top can go down.

Seeing Double
Rainbows are always a happy sight, especially for a big rainbow fan like me. =) But you almost never see a full rainbow or, even rarer, two rainbows at the same time. On NLEx, en route to Manila, we were witnesses to these 2 spectacular events happening at the same time.
At first I thought it was just your normal rainbow sighting, with majority of it concealed within/underneath the clouds.
After a while, another one revealed itself. Just couldn't resist the photo-op.
Lastly, just when I was about done looking at these simple wonders of nature, the inside rainbow showed itself in its full splendor.

No One Pushes Efren
"Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry." These were the words of CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida as he was receiving his award during the "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
Efren started the Kariton Klassroom (Pushcart Classroom) program to bring books to the children living in the slums and on the streets during his teenage years in his hometown in Cavite. With the help of fellow volunteers, he was able to form the Dynamic Teen Co. which now has 10,000 volunteers and has taught proper hygiene, reading, and writing to over 1,500 children.
These are the times that a Filipino shoud be more proud than winning a world title boxing match. These are the times when we prove to the world and to ourselves that we can make positive changes in our own ways. Congratulations Efren!

'Tis the Season of Love
Finally! Ever since the movie came out a few years back, I've always wanted to watch this rock musical live. Directed by no other than Robbie Guevarra, 9 Works Theatrical is bringing this hit production to Manila on V-day 2010!
For those who celebrate the season of love (pun intended), this is going to be one heck of a Valentine's date. =)

Crepe-ing Back to College
After having lunch in Ken Afford (see previous entry), decided to revisit an old favorite, Kamirori, known for their reasonably priced Japanese food and for dessert. I remembered having a "phase" during college where I would buy their ice cream crepe every time I go home. Hence, the weight during college I guess. Haha
A few months back, Kamirori moved from their previous location (at the ground level of our former condo) to
the other side of Katipunan, at the new Petron gas station just beside the entrance to Loyola Grand Villas. Just as well, their food AND desserts remained.
Personally, I think their California Maki is the best I've ever tasted. =) But I'm here to talk about their desserts.
Sadly, they don't have a counter anymore where the mouth-watering desserts used to be. But still, the taste and quality of their desserts did not disappoint. Ordered the Ice Cream Crepe and the Amaretto.
The Ice Cream Crepe is actually just vanilla ice cream topped with a layer of crepe and caramel cream. But it's still oh-so-good! And for just a 100 pesos!
The Amaretto is flourless chocolate cake covered with cream, amaretto, and bits of nuts. It tastes as good as it did since way back in college. I was immediately beaming with delight upon eating a mouthful of this sumptuous dessert.
Eating these desserts just brings back fond memories. =)

As I was already in the QC area yesterday, decided to have lunch here on my way back to Makati. Given my roots, Katipunan will always have a special place in my heart. That goes for Ken Afford as well, one of my favorite restaurants ever.
Other than the obviously affordable food (~P 120-150 a meal), it boasts of being able to invite not just students but people and foodies all over the metro to try their famous Sisig a la Domeng/Roque and their other 55 dishes.
Their menu is a list of your all-time favorite Filipino dishes from Lechon Kawali to Sinigang na Baboy or Hipon. Some of my favorites are Stuffed Porkchop (breaded porkchop stuffed with mushroom and cheese) and the Sisig a la Domeng (sizzling sisig with egg). While waiting for your order, they offer you free refillable soup. Serving size of one meal is good enough for 1-2 people.
In terms of service, the waiters are very friendly and are generous with smiles. =) Oh and they don't charge extra for service charge and/or VAT.

All's Well in Eat Well
For a long time, I've been wanting to eat at Eat Well! Delicious Kitchen in The Fort. Finally got the chance to eat there last night and true enough, it did not disappoint! =D
First of, I expected the usual chinese cuisine. Lechon Macau (or some other version, theirs was Roasted Crispy Pork, I think), dimsum, fried squid, hot-pots, etc which you can find in almost any Chinese restaurant in the metro. But I wanted to try something different, so we ordered the Steamed Egg White with Seafood to go with the Hakao and Roasted Crispy Pork.
True enough, Delicious Kitchen did not disappoint. The Hakao was just sumptuous and they're very generous with the shrimp. The Roasted Crispy Pork, although it doesn't look very appetizing with no clear efforts at presentation, is very tasty and goes best with Hoisin sauce. The Steamed Egg White with Seafood, as our main course, was a nice change from the normal orders and very yummy also. It's like different kinds of seafood (shrimp, squid, fish, and fish eggs) and mushroom on a bed of steamed egg whites. A must-try!!!
I'd definitely go back to Delicious Kitchen to try out their other sumptuous dishes.

Our latest discovery!
MOMOTARO BENTO offers really cheap beer (only P 100 for 3 bottles! But it’s not BBZ) and really cheap food as well. Their bento boxes range from P 120 to P 170 and you’re good to go. They also offer the usual pulutans like sisig and tokwa’t baboy to name a few.
Oh and for every order of a bucket of beer, they give you free pulutan. It’s fried shrimp head. We think these are the left-over heads from the tempura orders since the owner is also the owner of Nihonbashitei.

All Saint's Day
All Saint’s Day or Undas in Filipino, is one of the holidays where missing it is “frowned upon” by our entire clan. I don’t really know the normal tradition on how this holiday is celebrated since ever since, my memory of undas is a combination of a little fiesta and a reunion. And this year was no exception.
Lunch would be extended until 2 pm because of the many choices from KFC chicken to fried hito (catfish). Merienda would be a choice of cheese pimiento or chicken sandwich, all home-made. Yum! I think I gained another 2 or 3 pounds just from this weekend.
What I find funny about our tradition is, we stay until nighttime, just before dinner time, which is exactly the time when the dads and uncles are about to finish their scotch or whisky. =P While others pride themselves in going to the cemetery just to grieve for their loved ones and are not even allowed to laugh out loud (yes, I know some families), we, on the other hand, celebrate togetherness and the short time we have to catch up on the lives of our other relatives.
Alas, I left my socializing skills in the house this year. I was a lonely boy, playing with his sister’s Nintendo DS. =) There’s always next year.
